CURLERS' HOPES DASHED

DAVID Murdoch's Scottish team reached the end of the road today (Thurs) in the Le Gruyère European Curling Championships in Moscow.

They lost a tight second tie-breaker game, going down 5-7 to the Czech Republic.

Earlier Murdoch's Lockerbie-based team demolished Switzerland 9-3 to set up a second play-off against the Czechs.

The Scots now rank fifth overall, and, after his elimination, Murdoch said: "This really was a case of missed opportunities. We didn’t take our chances in some of the games that we should have.

"But it’s a tough week, and it’s the first time here for this team. I’m proud of the way they fought – it’s certainly not easy when you come here."

Earlier today the women's team, featuring Anna Sloan and Claire Hamilton of Lockerbie, faced Switzerland and came away with a 10-7 win.

Afterwards, skip Eve Muirhead said: "We felt relaxed out there.

"It was one of those games that didn’t really matter, but you wanted it to matter, if you know what I mean."
